I Feel Like This Shouldn't Be Such A Hard Question...
"Que te hace feliz?"
"What makes you happy?"
It's a street approach that my comp came up with. The idea is that since God's plan is a plan of happiness, and He doesn't do anything without the ultimate goal being our happiness, the best way to connect conversations to God's plan is to talk about what makes people happy. We tried walking around with a whiteboard the other day, and in general we found that it helps get people talking if nothing else!
Some conversations from this week:
-Que te hace feliz?
-Nothing
-...
-Que te hace feliz?
-Money and a different woman every day
-Que te hace feliz?
-I'm deaf
-*points to whiteboard*
-Okay, I'm not deaf. Nothing.
-Que te hace feliz?
-*points to boyfriend* He's a Muslim...
-Great! Que te hace feliz?
These are obviously the more extreme examples, but it's pretty sad that so many people wouldn't (or worse, couldn't) answer this question. Something I've learned on my mission is the importance of being deliberate in what you do, and also what you believe. Because I believe in God, Jesus Christ, His gospel, organized religion, and God's restored Church, I have some pretty big priorities, standards, and goals in my life, and an idea of where joy comes from, and what I can do to be happy. I trust in God and that living His commandments will make my life on earth meaningful and joyful, and that I can live happily again with Him someday.
Lots of people did have reasonable answers though! Friends, family, peace, health (people talk about that a lot here), children, the love of God, and the plan of happiness!
(That last guy was a member we bumped into but still, it felt good)
And our efforts to find people in all different ways are paying off. We had a ton of first lessons this week! Lots of memebrs have been coming with us and adding their testimonies to ours.
We've gotten to know the members a lot better and have some appointments to visit a lot of them this week! And our efforts to get to know some less-actives have been going really well, a few are starting up some spiritual habits that they've left behind for a little bit.
The work is picking up! Opening Sanatnder B has been an experience but we've seen miracles!
Slice of life
Did an exchange with Elder Romrell, who's now one of our ZLs. We trioed up, so I worked for a day with both my sons!
We visited a woodshop that one of our members works at and it had a fire outdoor grill setup. I wish I got pics of the meat we ate but we ate it all too fast.
Have another great week!
