You Can Take Elder Curtis Out Of The Islands...
... but you can't take the islands out of Elder Curtis.
We've been saying this a lot... I'm having a hard time shaking my Canarian slang, and keep calling busses guaguas (wawas). A member somehow had a bag of Canaries-exclusive gofio in his house. (it's like cereal) And we had a lot of canceled appointments this week, which is more like the islands than the normal way things go up here in the north.
But we got a lot done this week! Marian and Daniel and their kids run a snack shop but we've been trying to invite then to church. It's been tough since they're getting married pretty soon and they've been busy with that. (last week we didn't even see Daniel because he was on a bachelor party trip) We're getting to know their kids Daniela and Fernando a bit better too. Anyway this week Daniel and Fernando came to church, met a lot of people, and seemed to enjoy it. Progress is progress.
We contacted a few referrals this week. One was a really soft-spoken Spaniard guy who's going through a lot, and while we couldn't really keep the lesson on track with him, he told us he felt like we helped him and asked if we could come back. We'll do what we can to help.
The other one opened up immediately when we passed by his house, had the door wide open, and ushered us into his living room where he was watching The Matrix. We sit down and he immediately starts ranting about ancient maps and star charts and the world governments all started lying right after WWI and the earth is at least 4 or 5 times bigger than they want us to think and refraction of light through a glass of water and WHY CAN'T PEOPLE WAKE UP AND SEE THAT THE WORLD IS FLAT. When we asked him what that has to do with us he said he figured we might know something. He hasn't found a religion that helps him fit these theories yet. We told him that's not really what we do and excused ourselves. We really just get to explore this city and it's people with a greater purpose in mind. That's pretty cool, and it gets us into interesting situations sometimes.
Two cool Peruvian members moved here this week. They work for the same company but on opposite sides of Peru and got moved here at the same time and their bosses made them roommates. They didn't know each other before moving here, and you could say they lucked out in finding out they were both members of the Church. I wouldn't call it luck. Ronald and Lenny (I promise they're Peruvian) were SENT here. One of them was talking to his stake presidency about getting sent to Spain, and was told to treat it like a mission, remember what he stands for and represents in a new country. Then he showed up and basically got a comp. They're legends, and we got to help them get bus cards so they can come to church. They're going to work a lot but also want us to think of them if we need a hand in lessons. Áviles needs strong members like them if we're going to separate from the Gijon ward one day.
We're seeing signs that this message is true and that we're receiving divine help. That doesn't mean it's going to be effortless, or that everyone will listen, or that all of the good people will listen, or that all of the sane people will listen, or that accepting the gospel will make all of life's problems go away, but living the gospel as Christ taught, and as He restored it in our day through Joseph Smith, will help us be happier now, and happy forever with our Father in Heaven again.
