Coco, Guac, And Malachi

5 Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord:
6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers
-Malachi 4:5-6

This is a pretty classic missionary scripture, and a lit prophecy about latter-day genealogical and temple work. It's also really fun that it connects to a Disney movie about Mexican skeletons!

In our effort to get people to meet us and our members in non-awkward ways, we held a movie night this week and invited as many people as we could to come watch Coco with us and eat guacamole. We made some new friends and at the end I got to show my family tree to the group and explain how we as missionaries can help people connect with their ancestors. Like Miguel from the movie, I have a great-grandfather who's life changed the course of our family's history.

Alexander Robertson was the first member of his family to join the Church and move to the US. Later he picked up the Curtis last name from the family who took him in. And now here am I with a pretty awesome name.

Coco also makes it clear that family relationships and family history are almost never perfect, but connections with our family, both living and passed on, are worth maintaining. And the latter-day work of uniting families for eternity is a glorious sign of the times- we CAN prepare to live with our families for eternity, thanks to our Father in Heaven and his Son.

That was definitely the spiritual/social highlight of the week but here are some quick moments I wanted to share.

- Elder Allen built cardboard "armor of God" (Ephesians 6) for our FHE with our good friends the Chacón family! They've got really little kids so that's the kind of thing that goes over really well.
- He also has tendonitis in one foot according to the mission doctor who checked him out this week. We have to cut down the walking a bit...
- We met with Lorena and Leidy again! (If you remember they're renting a room from one of our members) We had an awesome lesson on the Restoration. Lorena also told us she's been reading the Book of Mormon and loving it! It's so great to see people connect with our Savior through a book that I've come to love so much.

It's been rough getting people to keep commitments lately, and easy to get frustrated. Sometimes I have to remember the things I say to struggling people all the time- there's Someone who gets it, miracles and answers take time and faith. God's there and He listens.

Remember me... though I have to say goodbye...
